Our Philosophy on Wellness

We follow the teachings of Swami Sivananda, who was a responsible for promoting the philosophy of Yoga and Vedanta among the people of India and throughout the world. He is also the founder of the Divine Life Society, as well as being the author of more than 200 books on Yoga, Vedanta and other topics.

Swami Sivananda was born as Kuppuswamy on 8th September, 1887, in Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu. Kuppuswamy displayed great intelligence right from childhood. While completing his medical studies in Tanjore, he started a medical journal titled “Ambrosia.” After graduating in medicine, he practiced in Malaysia for ten years. It was his practice to provide free care to the poorest people.

As time passed, he began to feel that medicine cured a person only at a superficial level, without touching their soul. People are not affected by problems only at a physical level, but also at the spiritual level. His spiritual quest compelled him to leave Malaysia in 1923 and return to India.

Meeting Swami Vishwananda Saraswati and Initiation

In India, Kuppuswamy began visiting pilgrimage destinations. He met Swami Vishwananda Saraswati in Rishikesh in 1924, and took him as his Guru. Vishwananda initiated him into sanyas (asceticism) and gave him the name of Swami Sivananda. However, Swami Vishnudevananda, the Mahant of Sri Kailas Ashram, performed the rest of the Viraja Homa ceremonies later. In 1927, Sivananda started a charitable dispensary at Lakshmanjula, where he treated pilgrims, holy men and the poor. Swami Sivananda left the world on 14 July 1963, on the bank of Ganges, in Shivanandanagar.

I have been a student in Jeff’s yoga class since 2010. He has deepened my understanding of the principles of yoga through his classes and I have met some amazing people through my friendship with him. I have tried other teachers and classes, but I keep coming back to Jeff’s classes. They are like none other! — Chenese

Surya Namaskar is a beautiful studio that focuses on the practice instead of the “business of yoga,” which is what keeps me coming back. Jeff has decades of experience, is genuine, and teaches traditional yoga without the fluff. He has helped me find balance, health and peace in my life. — Mitchell

Jeffrey has been my primary Yoga teacher for the past 6 years. His classes never fail to challenge my body, open my heart, and inspire my spirit. His exacting alignment cues, thoughtfully themed classes, attentive presence, and most of all, his example of living what he teaches, have helped me to refine my practice and person-hood on and off the mat. He is the finest yoga teacher in Saint Petersburg — Teresa

Practicing with Jeffrey alleviates the need for a physical therapist or psychotherapist in my life. After a yoga practice with Jeffrey I feel brighter and stronger inside and out. — Micheal

Jeffrey shares his abundant wisdom in such a compelling way, one that inspires and supports us to be grounded, centered and balanced. He does an incredible job teaching us how to bring our best to others by taking what we learn on the mat into the world. Jeffrey truly fulfills a higher purpose by teaching through us, and I am grateful to have his as one of my teachers in my life! — James

Jeffrey believes in the transformational power of yoga.  Practicing yoga can transform your body and your life.  But Jeffrey takes each student where they are.  If you are there to open up tight hamstrings, Jeffrey will teach you how to do this through safe and appropriate poses.  If you are seeking a deeper experience with yoga, Jeffrey interweaves the wisdom of yoga teachings throughout his classes. Jeffrey helps connect what we do on the mat to what we do in life.  And his classes are transformational.  No matter what you are looking for and what state of mind you arrive in, you will leave feeling more open in body and heart.   — Liz
